2023 Legislative Session: Success for Emergency Physicians
Now that Texas has reached the end of the regular 88th Legislative Session (Sine Die), the work to sort out what actually happened and how it impacts emergency medicine actually begins. The legislature worked up until the very end to pass the budget and other key pieces of legislation, but the Governor has indicated that he will call the Legislature back for a series of special sessions to renew efforts to pass his high-priority issues that failed during the regular session. In fact, he called the first of these only hours after the legislature adjourned to take up property tax relief and border security.

Prior to the legislative session, TCEP had identified several policy areas that it wanted to focus on. Priorities included protecting physician liability, increasing psychiatric access in the emergency department, improving telemedicine capabilities, and curtailing scope of practice expansion. Hard Hats for Little Heads is the longest-running outreach program by the Texas Medical Association (TMA). Since 1994, Hard Hats for Little Heads has put the spotlight on the use of helmets to protect children during activities such as biking, skating, and riding scooters. More than 375,000 helmets have been distributed to help keep children safe while operating recreation on wheels. Hard Hats for Little Heads not only promotes safety but also encourages physical activity which may help to reduce incidence of childhood obesity.

Welcome Carol Carlton to TCEP staff.
Carol joins the TCEP staff with 13 years of non-profit association experience. Highlights of her previous roles include membership and operations management, event planning, and bookkeeping. She is enthusiastic to represent TCEP where she hopes to help support its mission through team collaboration and member engagement.

Carol has a B.S. in Human Environmental Sciences with a focus on food and nutrition from The University of Alabama (UA). She is a graduate student through UA’s distance learning program working to earn her M.S. in Human Nutrition. She currently lives in her hometown of Austin, Texas with her fiancé, Dan.

TMLT
Emergency medicine claims typically involve diagnostic errors. In this case study, a patient was improperly triaged. When a claim was filed, TMLT quickly went to work and won a clear, decisive victory at trial.
